Endocrine surgery

This type of surgery is used to treat diseases of the endocrine organs like the thyroid, parathyroid and the adrenal glands. There are several methods of performing surgery on these organs.

Disease of the thyroid
The thyroid is located at the base of the neck below the larynx. It produces hormones that regulate the rate of metabolism and affect the growth of many other systems in the body as well as how they function. If the thyroid malfunctions, hormone production is thrown off balance. For example, patients who suffer from an underfunctioning thyroid (hypothyroidism) tend to feel tired and depressed.

Disease of the parathyroid
The parathyroid glands are small endocrine glands in the neck that produce parathyroid hormones. Parathyroid glands control the amount of calcium in the blood and bones. Parathyroid disorders can therefore result in kidney stones and osteoporosis. The major disorder is overactivity of one or more of the parathyroids, also known as hyperparathyroidism. This can be cured by removing some or all of the parathyroids to ensure normal hormone secretion and thus regulate the calcium level in the blood.

Disease of the adrenal gland
The adrenal glands are located in the thoracic abdomen. They sit on top of the kidneys, one on each side, and produce many different hormones, including epinephrine (adrenaline), norepinephrine and steroid hormones. The adrenal glands also help to maintain the bodys fluid and electrolyte balance. Because of the large number of hormones they produce, any malfunction of these glands can trigger a great many diseases.
